Glasshouse Competition

Welcome to Glasshouse, the European design competition organised by Pilkington - Europe's leading glass manufacturer - in association with Architecture Today magazine of London.

The object of the competition is to design a house for the 21st century that demonstrates and exploits the architectural potential of glass. Entry is open to all architecture students and young architects across Europe until 31st May 2002. See brief for the full story.

Glasshouse is an incredible opportunity to realise your vision, creativity and talent. The competition is being promoted through the architectural press and universities  across Europe, and will be judged by a distinguished panel of  architects.

Prizes total 35,000 Euros, comprising
- For each of the 9 regional categories, a first prize of 2,000  Euros, a second prize of 750 Euros and a third prize of 250 Euros
- For the overall winner, a further 8,000 euros to add to their  regional winners prize, giving a total of 10,000 euros

Glasshouse entries will be judged by five leading architects: Pekka Helin, Sergey Kisselev, Ian Ritchie, Matthias Sauerbruch, Elías  Torres and Mark Swenarton, who is publishing editor of Architecture  Today and a technical representative of Pilkington.

In all cases prizes will be allocated according to the judges'  discretion. In addition special commendations may be made by the judges if considered appropriate. Awards will be presented at Glasstec 2002 in Dusseldorf. The winning entries will be published in Architecture Today and Europe's other leading Architectural magazines.

International Competition for Students Berlin 2002, UIA

Occasion and Objectives

Every three years, the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) organises an international congress of architecture. From 22 to 26 July 2002 it will be holding its XXI World Congress of Architecture in Berlin, entitled "Resource Architecture" in co-operation with the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA. Accompanying the congress, an international urban design ideas competition will be held to promote young talent in the field of architecture. The aim of the competition is to collect design ideas for redeveloping an inner-city area in Berlin-Mitte. The ideas submitted are to make a user-oriented and resource-saving contribution to the development of this important district over the next thirty years and define an architecture for the 21st century.

Urban, real estate and building development must meet the challenge of developments on an increasingly global scale by encouraging young people to enter architect's and planning offices, as well as construction, real-estate and finance companies and, in particular, by making optimal use of the latest information technologies and providing high-quality training.

Given the topics of the current architectural debate - i.e. the European city, the social city, New Urbanism, mobility, the service-and-science society - the question arises about the future direction and architectural language of our cities. The redevelopment project for a site at Heidestrasse in Berlin-Mitte is to set an example for the development, interconnecting and "meshing" of inner-city wastelands.

The competition results are to provide ideas and perspectives that indicate potential developments. The competition site in the very heart of the city, at the interface between the formerly separate eastern and western halves of Berlin, still symbolises the ruptures in the city's urban growth in the course of its history. The main objective is therefore to find solutions which will connect this inner-city redevelopment site with the existing urban fabric and build "bridges" between the existing urban areas. The redevelopment plan must therefore take into account the surroundings.

This special location is to be given a new identity as a high-quality architectural showpiece for the city centre.

Procedure
The competition is open to students, and is designed as a single, open international ideas competition for the development of a defined urban area of Berlin. Unless otherwise stated, the procedure follows the UNESCO/UIA guidelines for international competition and those of the GRW 95. The entries are judged anonymously. The competition language is English.

Eligibility
Students with architecture and/or urban planning as their main subjects who have studied for at least two years are entitled to participate in the competition. Students who have chosen landscape planning, architecture and art as their main subjects may only participate in co-operation with students of architecture and/or urban planning. Co-operation with students from other disciplines, such as structural and civil engineering, ecology, sociology, etc., is expressly desired. However, each participant may submit one competition entry only and has to confirm his/her authorship of the project by his/her signature on the `Declaration of Authorship?sheet. Each participant may contribute to one competition entry only and may not, therefore, participate in more than one work team.

Each member of a work team must be named and have a right to participate. The organiser will make efforts to ensure that the competition designs are recognised by the universities as semester projects. Participants are not to be related to jury members, either directly or by marriage.
