COURSE NAME: Architectural Design II

Design Project #1: Sports Arena 

Background

A Community Association in a residential district of a city has been donated an abandoned parcel of land from the city.  It has decided to build a Sports Arena with a small park on the site. 

The community is in a quiet residential area of mixed income, race and religion.  It wishes to create a building serving as a casual gathering place and an occasional place for community events also.

Objective

In this exercise, a Sculptural and Monumental aspects of Architecture are emphasized.  Three dimensional approach to architectural design is examined and developed. 

Program Requirements

§         The Arena with a flat floor 120’x70’. It should have a clear center height of 45’. It should be surrounded on all sides by 10 rows of raised seats for spectators. Access to these seats must not be across the floor of the arena.

§    Storage(s) for Temporary seats, Gym equipments, etc: 2000 SF.

§         (2) Locker rooms: 400 SF each

§         Entrance Lobby with Ticket office: 1200 SF.

§         Office for a chairperson: 200 SF,

§         Administrative Offices: 150 SF each,

§         Storage for the Arena: 200 SF,

§         Kitchen with Dining Area:300 SF,

§         One(1) Private Toilet, Two (2) Public Toilets: 100 SF each,

§         Janitor’s Closet: 20 SF, Storage(s): 100 SF, Mech. Rm.: 120 SF,

§         Electrical Closet: 40 SF,

§         Vestibule: 150 SF, Circulation as required.

The park to have one Drinking Fountain.  Seating, Playgrounds, Plantings, etc. are at the discretion of the Designer.  There are no existing Trees on Site. No on site parking req’d.

(1) Site / Floor Plan, (4) Elevations and (2) Sections and a Building Model, all at 1/8” =1’-0”
